La Vieja Bodega | Pitres | Alpujarras

This property is ideal for individuals and groups coming to the High Alpujarra for walking, biking or horseriding holidays. It offers self-catering accomodation for up to 10 people in a beautiful 250-300 year old restored Moorish casa.

The house, in the village of Pitres, is in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Andalucia in southern Spain. Authentic restoration and some alteration have made this a very unique, spacious and beautiful house. Built on two levels, the upper floor of 250m sq. is the living accommodation and the lower floor houses the old bodega (wine cellar), where up to 5 years ago the villagers were still bringing their grapes to be pressed. Of course the jewel in the crown of this beautiful house is its open internal patio with Arabic style arches and an Arabic Hammam style swimming pool.

There are 5 twin bedrooms which can also be made up as doubles as required. There is a large bathroom with 3 shower cubicles (one with bathtub), 2 WC and also a downstairs cloakroom. There is plenty of living space as the property has two living rooms (one with a wood burning stove and TV with UK and Spanish channels), a kitchen/dining room with a large table that seats 10 + people, and the cellar can be used as a chill out/games area. The kitchen is very well equipped with 8 hobs, an oven, microwave, dishwasher, popcorn maker, kettle, toaster etc. There is also a washing machine and hairdryer in the house. Outside there is a large terrace with garden and dining furniture and an array of beautiful plants, and there is also comfortable seating around the Hammam pool.

La Vieja Bodega (The Old Wine Cellar) is near the edge of Pitres which is more of a small town than a village. It was once the Moorish "capital" of the Alpujarras and is today the administrative centre for La Taha, the local region comprising 8 villages. It has several bars, restuarants, a very good vegetarian restuarant El Jardin, hotel, good supermarket, health food shop, bank, clinic, pharmacy and a few other shops. Friday mornings are market days in the plaza where all fresh produce, clothes and crafts can be bought. Prices in Spain are generally very good- you will definitely be happily surprised at the cost of a meal, wine, beer and food in shops, and prices and size of drinks in bars, where you will generally still get a free 'tapa' with each wine or beer ordered! Tapas can vary from olives and cheese or ham, to generous small plates of pork stew or paella - there is a big range and they reflect Alpujarrean cuisine (which helps when you are faced with the unknown on a menu). A few drinks have often supplied a free meal.

Pitres has avoided becoming a tourist mecca, which has happened to a few of the villages in the High Alpujarra - on the positive side their more active night life can be enjoyed after a short drive. Flamenco and live music concerts (jazz, world music, classical) are regular events in summer

A great advantage of being in Pitres is that it is in the centre of the High Alpujarras and many of the best walks pass through or near it.
