HOLIDAYMAKERS and expats who have had to make their way to Granada from another airport in Andalucia can now look forward to direct flights from London to Granada. British Airways have announced they will be operating four flights a week for around 100 Euros each way from July 25.

The new route is the result of negotiations between BA and the department of tourism in Granada.

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays the planes take off from LondonCityAirport at 9.10 am and land in Granada at 12.50pm.

After four years of meticulous renovation, bystanders thronged outside the crypt of the Palace of Carlos Quinto to witness the gradual return of the 300 kilo lions - one of the most famous sights in the Alhambra Moorish palace and fortress complex.

The Alhambra's director explained. "Thick layers of lime have been removed, which will help protect against the invasion of biological elements, as well as strengthening several cracks. They have also removed harmful metallic elements, and other adhesives, such as cement."

It might be a backwater hardly known even on Granada's own Costa Tropical, but the Lecrin Valley is certainly big in children's TV. So big in fact that regular visitors to the stunning rural idyll include Teletubbies creator Andrew Davenport and Bob the Builder producer Kate Fawkes. "I actually met them both in a shop a few months ago and was able to introduce them to each other," explains local hotelier Scarlett Farrow, who has lived in Lecrin, which translates literally as the 'Happy Valley', for a decade.

"It is a beautiful area where people can have their privacy if they want it, but there is plenty going on here and nearby in Granada," adds Scarlett, who runs La Finca guest house near Murchas - home to just 278 inhabitants.

A sustainable tourism effort from the Patronato de la Alhambra, the World Monuments Fund and others is taking the Alhambra into the 21st century, using technology to bring previously hidden areas of the complex to light.

We have just taken on some new properties which still have availability in July and August, and some have private pools too. Take a look at Casa Fresno, located in the pretty village of Pinos del Valle. It has a sunny pool and terrace area, 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, as well as a roof terrace with lovely mountain views. Why not take a break in the mountains near Granada and enjoy the cooler mountain air whilst still having Granada and also the beaches just a 30 minute drive away.
